What do aged care facilities provide?

What are aged care facilities and what services do they provide?

As we get older, our social and physical needs, and our values often change. A time may come when a person needs to decide whether their current living arrangements meet their needs. If you or a loved-one are no longer able to live independently, and would like the ongoing support and care of aged-care professionals, then it may be worth considering moving to an aged-care or Residential Care Facility.

Aged-care facilities are led by expert carers and medical staff that provide comfort and support to residents. A high-quality facility should not only offer basic care, but should work to create a community that enhances the lives of residents. Apart from medical care and day-to-day support, an aged-care facility should provide opportunities for socialising, and offer a wide-variety of recreational activities to residents. Importantly, an aged-care facility should be guided by values of respect, excellence, high-quality care and stewardship.

The Australian Government provides funding to aged-care organisations that provide residential care facilities for older individuals whom can no longer look after themselves. To receive funding, aged-care facilities must meet the required standards. Residents of approved facilities and feel assured that they are receiving quality care.

What are the benefits of living in an aged care facility?

Medical Professionals

Residential Care facilities, or aged-care homes, are staffed by experts that offer constant medical care. Profession medical staff are trained to provide high-quality care in either ongoing or emergency situations. The provision of this level of care is vitally important for the wellbeing and peace-of-mind of residents and their families.

A high-quality residential care facility should provide registered nurses and carers that are supported by other health professionals, such as occupational and diversional therapists, physiotherapists, and podiatrists. Having access to a range of medical professionals means that residents receive personalised and attentive care.

Medical care should be under the supervision of doctors who are available when needed. A resident should feel confident that their medical needs are taken care of with expertise and professionalism.

Equipment

Access to state-of-the-art equipment is crucial for the comfort of residents. A high-quality aged-care facility will be equipped with specialised bathroom aids (e.g. support rails and shower chairs), adjustable beds, pressure relief mattresses and bed lifts, walking aids, wheelchairs and other medical supplies. For the safety of residents, carers should be thoroughly trained in using this equipment.

Food and Lounging

Residential Care facilities provide meals, preferably cooked on the premises. Residents are offered three meals a day, along with morning and afternoon tea. A high-quality service should be offered in well-equipped and conveniently located dining rooms and lounge rooms.

Common spaces should be bright and comfortable. These spaces are designed to facilitate social activities and are often used to accommodate concerts, art classes, and other group activities. Recreational activities are vital to the health and well-being of residents, and they foster a sense of community.

How to Decide on the Right Aged Care Facility for You or your Loved-One?

When choosing an aged care, or residential facility, you should tour at least three before you make a decision. Spend time talking to the staff, and if possible, talk to others who have had experience with the facility. Different facilities offer different levels of care and service, so it is important to be clear about your needs, or the needs of your loved-one.

If you or your loved-one are capable of living independently, but is in need of transportation services, light housekeeping, and nearby medical staff, then an assisted living facility may be an appropriate choice. However, if you or your loved-one requires constant care, then residential care is an excellent option. If your loved-one is suffering from dementia, then it is imperative that you locate a facility that offers specialised care.
