Aging Gracefully – You Can Too!

Everyone wants to look good – it’s a natural human desire, and this fact doesn’t change as we get older. The more we age, however, the more we may begin to concern ourselves more with the physical aspects of health and aging gracefully, rather than the aesthetics. We begin to consider the future, and find that we would prefer to, in our later years require a healthy body that is let’s face it, low care. Nursing homes are full of people who didn’t take their health into account until it was too late, and are paying the price. So what can we do to ensure that we age gracefully?

  • Diet: Today it seems like there are a million different diet fads, and each one teaches a separate gospel about what you should and shouldn’t put into your body. While some people may prefer the rigours of a strict diet plan, there are some general rules to follow that don’t require a regimented list of can’s and cant’s. The number one thing you want to avoid: sugar, as well as any processed carbohydrates and saturated fats.

The general rule of thumb is that you should consume as many whole, natural foods as possible, especially vegetables with loads of Fiber and lean meats. Water is essential for our body to stay healthy and function well, not to mention our digestive system, drinking up to 3 liters a day will ensure a well-hydrated body for optimal health.

  • Exercise: Like diet, exercise culture seems to have taken a turn for the extreme in many instances, but health does not require you to join a cross-fit gym, or start lifting weights two hours a day. While some strength training is certainly recommended, many people find simple and relatively easy exercises such as daily walking, tai chi, or gentle yoga, to be more than enough for maintaining a healthy physique. Regular exercise of any kind will help to keep the body strong, free of aches and pains, supports the immune system, as well as reduces the amount of stress.
  • Indulgences: While it is certainly not the end of the world if you choose to drink every now and then, or even smoke the occasional cigarette, these sorts of pleasures do long-term harm to our bodies, resulting in faster aging. The key, then, is moderation, and this includes all areas of indulgence, from food to alcohol.
  • Stress: This is perhaps one of the biggest causes of poor aging, as it wreaks havoc on nearly every part of the mind and body. If you want to age gracefully, stress reduction is a must. This means taking time out of your day specifically for you, whether that means meditation, reading, or any other preferred form of relaxation. If you’re working on aging gracefully, the important thing is that you de-stress every day!

By following the above tips, you can ensure you are aging gracefully, making your later years much easier, and you will only require a minimal level of care.  Nursing homes everywhere will confirm that these sorts of factors play massive roles in the issues faced by many of their residents. While there is nothing we can do about the reality of getting older, there are clearly many steps that we can take to mitigate the most harmful elements of daily life upon our long-term health.
